Gloopy liquids – The client asked for help to make a strong salt solution appear more "gloopy" because his overseas customer associated the thicker appearance with strength and effectiveness. There are various viscosity modifiers on the market but the strength of the ionic solution made this a very challenging request. A programme of tests with a range of materials from our experience yielded a suitably "gloopy" product that mixed and diluted easily.
 

Gold bags – The client asked for a bag suitable to pack 500g of a sand-based organophosphate insecticide for an export market. We suggested a gold gusseted pouch. The result was an impressively opulent one which enhanced the client's reputation and the perceived value of the product. Within a year they were back for more!
 

Special box and display design – Occasionally clients ask if we can help with the design of a suitable corrugated paper box for a particular application or with a more elaborate retail display unit. With this sort of request we work with an experienced and capable manufacturer who can also arrange for UN certification if required. Some examples include: a box designed to discharge from the bottom, a display pallet for 2.5L bottles, an elaborate display unit.
 

Bucket trays – The client asked for help to prevent the stacks of pails that we filled and palletised from being squeezed together in transport so that their lids were lifted and damp air allowed to affect the powder inside. We developed a bucket tray which keeps the pails rigidly apart even when squeezed during pallet wrapping and transport.
 

Non-stick coating – The client asked us to blend shredded rubber with a pigment coating and pack it into polythene sacks. The coating took an extended time to cure, particularly in cold weather and this resulted in the sack contents matting together like a rubber shred pillow. We addressed this by the addition of a small percentage of an anti-stick powder. The rubber pillow problem was solved whatever the temperature.
 

Preservative addition – The client asked us to blend a plant growth stimulant formulation which was destined to be used in a "ready to use" retail pack. We were concerned that the formulation was vulnerable to microbiological attack which would lead to fermentation and potentially to "blown" retail packs. We suggested a preservative and the client accepted. We have made over 10,000litres since without any complaints of "blown" packs.
 

Red and yellow mixed granules – The client asked us to reformulate a pesticide product as a mixture of vivid yellow and red granules for an export market. It took a while to find the right dyes that would be both vivid and not fade or merge together.


Stable dye selection – The client asked us to blend liquids and add a coloured dye. After a period of time the dye faded. The problem was to find out why and to substitute a stable dye. After a variety of tests we discovered that we needed to change to a dye that is UV stable and also to employ a preservative to prevent microbiological degradation.

Special bottle seals to contain capsules – The client asked us for stackable bottle with an aluminium seal that left enough space under the cap to hold a gelatine enzyme capsule. We found a suitable bottle, seal and cap. It appeals to us as an impressively simple innovative way of securing a minor component within a major one whilst keeping them separate and we wonder if anyone else has a similar problem.

High volume trigger spray – The client asked us to help develop a laundry aid prewash trigger spray pack. It was important that the spray volume should be as large as possible to minimise the number of squeezes per application.

Moisture proof bags – The client asked us to find a plastic sack that would be sufficiently moisture proof to meet a US military specification. We found one and the blend and pack contract is now well established.

Working for another client and we noticed that the bags we were using were allowing the smell from their contents to escape despite being completely sealed. With approval from the client we tested a range of alternative bag materials and changed to a new bag at the next production run. The stock has never smelled so good!
